The Gut-Hormone Highway: Why Bloating and PMS Are Connected

PMS

Spoiler: “Normal” serum hormone levels are almost irrelevant — if not taken into consideration with other types of testing. And what’s even more important than blood levels, is what your gut is doing with your hormones.

Here’s what most women don’t know: after your liver processes estrogen, it packages it up and hands it to your gut for removal. But if your gut has high beta-glucuronidase (which we can see on a GI-MAP test), it unpacks that estrogen and sends it right back into circulation.

This leads to estrogen dominance symptoms like:

  • Bloating
  • Breast tenderness
  • Mood swings
  • Heavy periods

So while you’re blaming your ovaries, the real issue might be in your poop.

Clear your gut, and your cycle gets better. It really can be that simple.
